To what extent did the invention of the flying shuttle and the Spinning Jenny affect the textiles industry in Britain during the First Industrial Revolution?

This study examines the extent to which the invention of the Flying Shuttle and the Spinning Jenny affected the textiles industry in Britain during the First Industrial Revolution. Although both inventions are widely recognized as important milestones in the mechanization of textile manufacturing, few researchers have studied them together and made a comparison across multiple dimensions. Therefore, the main idea of this study is to compare the Flying Shuttle and the Spinning Jenny in terms of their technological, economic and social impacts, and analyze which invention had a greater effect on the transformation of the British textile industry. The research utilizes a qualitative approach based on secondary data analysis, including academic literature, historical evidence and quantitative economic data. A comparative analysis is then conducted across three analytical dimensions in order to evaluate the level of contribution of each invention. The findings show both inventions played pivotal roles but differed significantly. While the Flying Shuttle incrementally improved weaving, the Spinning Jenny revolutionized spinning, cutting production costs, shifting Britain from a net importer to a net exporter of cotton textiles, and altering gender roles and workforce structure. The study concludes the Spinning Jenny had a greater overall impact on British textile mechanization during the First Industrial Revolution.
